The Upgrade Upfield Train Line 2030 campaign has been coordinated by Climate Action Merri-bek and Coburg North residents Jane Holroyd and Ruth Sandy.
People in Melbourne’s north have been pushing for improvements to train services for decades. Our 2030 campaign picks up the baton from the Upfield Transport Alliance, which in 2018 lodged a parliamentary petition for track duplication, which was signed by more than 3000 Upfield Line passengers.
The Upfield Transport Alliance website was administered by Fawkner resident John Englart, who died in 2025.
We’ve reignited the campaign after the Victorian Government’s 2025 decision to dump a promised upgrade to the line. The upgrade would have allowed trains to turn around at Gowrie Station, improving service frequency and reliability for most passengers.
In 2026 Upfield Line passengers continue to experience lengthy waits between timetabled services, in addition to cancellations and short-shunting.
The state government has failed to remove the capacity constraints caused by the Upfield Line’s single track.
